Chemistry: The End of An Era
Jan. 8th, 2009 03:08 pmOur lab tables are as long as the room, leaving about 1.5 ft. of space for an individual to work. There is a carrel in the middle that divides the table in half, but there's no backing, so you can see the person on the other side.
It is said that people define spaces midst smaller spaces in their world for themselves. Earth is too big a concept. Less so, yet equally daunting is Asia or the India (which really does deserve its term 'subcontinent,' because dear GOD). Maharashtra is a little more bearable. Bombay is getting more comfortable. And Ville Parle Rd. Mahant Extension is a niche. This is why we like our rooms. They are a small cozy extensions we can identify with. If you just thought of the thing as a box made of concrete and dry wall, you would feel rather suffocated. You also now see why the Total Perspective Vortex would have the power to kill somebody.
And so, I always thought of my chemistry lab as a box, a four man work station. I completed something, an arrangement. A four leaf clover. There was Michael to my left, Grayden in front of me, and Shreya in front of Michael.
We never talked.
Chemistry lab is not about talking. You have three and a half hours to carry out your experiment. And you positively RUSH right through it, because no WAY is that enough time. At first I thought, "You must be joking. That's an obscene amount of time." But you really need it.
And oops, if you don't finish your experiment in time, you get a zero, well done. The only reason I vaguely remembered Grayden in front of me was his terrible luck in the first experiment.
( In which things are set on fire and crucibles are children )
