This post is a bit late, but it still looks like an amazing fest!

Big Gay Hamlet Ficathon
I believe firmly in everyone's right to crack!AUs. I think that crack!AUs are one of fandom's greatest strengths--our endless capacity to reinvent the works that we love, and to stretch the boundaries of our readers' recognition, gives me hope for the possibility of creation and communion.

So I won't say that Orson Scott Card shouldn't have written his egregiously offensive retelling of Hamlet. I will say, however, that I think it's painful, upsetting, and not at all in the spirit of the play that I love.

I'll say this, as well: If you don't like Card's Hamlet, you can write another. This thread is for that.

My professor was frustrated that our university's March Madness game was during class, and he wondered if the university would let him show it on the big screen in the auditorium (it's CS 1110, so there are a million people in the class) while he was teaching class. Apparently he decided it was better to ask forgiveness than permission.

Follow up post to MESSAGE TO THE BARTENDER THAT I HAVE BEEN STARING AT FOR THREE SEMESTERS

I love my new attitude, which is, "Fuck it, I'm graduating soon. I am going to do whatever I want." So I talked to him. The all-caps in this post have no relation whatsoever to the amount of alcohol I have consumed. I have managed to answer most of the insecure questions I posed in my previous post.

1) Meh, bet he has people flirting with him all the time. I'm a nobody.
LOOK AT ALL THE FUCKS I GIVE.

2) Should I order a beer from him sometime? That would require me biding my time till the servers stop taking beer orders and customers have to go to the bar to get something.
I ORDERED A BEER FROM HIM.

3) What else does he do besides bartending? Is he a student? Did he used to be a student? What keeps him here in this town working this job? Is he happy?
HE WAS A STUDENT. I TALKED TO HIM WHILE SLOWLY FINISHING MY SAMPLE BEER. He was an English + History major who wanted to be a corporate lawyer but then worked in a law office and hated it. So now he's working at Mellow earning funds and taking a break in our fantastic college town. He likes bartending more than he likes serving. He is happy here, he supposes.

4) My parents would fucking kill me if I asked out a bartender.
ENGLISH + HISTORY MAJOR. HELL YES, THEY WOULD KILL ME.

5) I'm not that kind of person. I've only asked out one person, and that was after about a year and a half. And I considered THAT really bold. Asians, and our pile of sekrit feelings.
I AM APPARENTLY THAT KIND OF PERSON.

6) If I tried to sit at the bar during a random quiet time by myself, it would be a better time to talk to him, but he would think I was totally pathetic drinking by myself on a weekday. Then again, I am an engineer.
HE ASKED ME WHAT I DO. I SAID ENGINEERING. HE THINKS IT'S COOL.

7) I have never wanted to ask someone out based on how they look. That's really odd. But I just want to stare at his aesthetic symmetry and find out if he likes Firefly. That's a date, right?
I ARRIVED FOR BEER, I STARED, HE IS MORE GORGEOUS UP CLOSE. AND NOW HE KNOWS MY NAME. *FIST PUMP*

For anyone interested in chatting with a bunch of fellow Person of Interest fans, Purple Junkie is an admin of The Irrelevants, a chat where anyone can sign in (I signed in as a guest since Tumblr was taking forever) and talk about the show with other fans.

You can find the chat here.

Today I learned how to properly filter out noise and change the pitch of my voice on Audacity. I don't know why it never occurred to me to do this. I've always disliked my voice, because no matter how old I am, I still sound like a little girl. If only I could sing everything I want to say. *sigh* I know other women who have great speaking voices, and I've tried a lot of things like speaking in a lower register, but I can't sustain it because I always forget and slip back into my regular voice.

But not any longer, dudes. I am so excited. I only have to drop the pitch of my voice half a step on the software, and it sounds much better. I always bemoaned the fact that I love reading stories out loud but can't because I don't have a suitable voice. But on this day, science strikes back. Technology, I salute you.

You guys, you guys. I was talking to [livejournal.com profile] saucery regarding their post about Total Recall 2070 on [livejournal.com profile] smallfandomfest, and I happened to mention that the show sounded like Due South with androids. (Just dwell on that. Due South in the cyberpunk future. With Fraser as an android. I hope you are suitably excited about watching this show now.)

And holy shit, they wrote me a crossover fic. They. Wrote me. A crossover fic.

*mind exploding everywhere*

It's called "Set and Match" and is here at Archive of Our Own. I am totally reading it after I finish my classwork. Thanks so much saucery. You are awesome saucery. (What I did there. PLEASE SEE IT.)

A fellow Sherlockian and I met up while everyone else was at home watching the Superbowl, and we began phase 1 of our Believe in Sherlock campaign at our university.

You can find the detailed story of our exploits here. And yes, that is my Tumblr. (Why do I get the feeling my online self and real life self and merging together in a headlong collision that I can't stop?)

1) This song is extremely addicting, especially when I'm coding.

2) Yes, I know I already posted a fanvid with this song to Sherlock, but whoever did this vid for Doctor Who absolutely nails the timing on all the scenes. It is beautiful.

2) The Dandy Warhols totally shred.

Today marked the day of my birthday, wherein I worked till 6PM then went to my friend's house for Chinese New Year and had stir fry and ChocoVine (Dutch drinking chocolate mixed with wine. Yes, I hear wine fans cringing. No, don't care. I'm allowed to have non-serious drinking days) while watching Doctor Who.

Then I went out with my other friend to check two things off my local bucket list: Irish Car Bombs (pardon the name) and birthday cake shots (made from vanilla vodka and other mysterious ingredients). Usually people do this when they turn 21, so I decided I had some catching up to do. (When I turned 21, I stayed home, ate cake with my friends, and watched The Fugitive.) And we got the birthday shots free, because it was my birthday, and that particular bar is awesome. Both drinks were delicious. I never thought I would meet a sweet liquor drink that I liked, but I suppose it helped that they both had milk in them.

Got back to see that our local Sherlockians group is still very much alive and fanning. Apparently today was the day everyone came out of the closet about being a shipper and reading slash fic, and there was a long thread about smut recs and people's opinions about  slash in fandom. The best little gem of this conversation was "Not all slash fic is enjoyable, but all enjoyable fic is slash."

That is some prime fandom gold, right there. I just about died.

Points for Microsoft! Microsoft discusses how it's difficult to hire the best people to come work for it in a state that discriminates against them. This adds to my hypothesis that the LGBTQIA (too many acronyms now?) has a strong presence in the field of computer science. My computer graphics class last semester had quite a large portion of students from the university queer community, (I'm trying, like many of my other friends in the community, to take back that slur and make it a positive.) and I wonder if it has to do with the kind of mind and personality that is required for computer science or the atmosphere that makes it no big deal to come out.

I cannot tell you how pleased I am that Sherlock has started awareness and discussions of asexuality. It would take a high-functioning sociopath in a scarf, wouldn't it?

I think that asexuality is an important component to how a person thinks and his/her relationships with people, and it makes me happy that keen writers are learning about asexuality to add faithful characterisation and depth to their stories. No matter the reason, it's wonderful that asexuality is getting talked about by a wider group. I can only hope that they learn from honest resources that are free of stereotypes and wrong assumptions. I think that's actually what I'm most afraid of. I do hope that Mr. Cumberbatch does his research and sets a good example that asexuals can be as normal and kick-ass as everyone else. Well, perhaps normal isn't the correct word for Sherlock...

The point of this entire Tumblr is, in their own words, "a blog dedicated to searching for the cold, hard, never sleeping ginger truth: Michael Fassbender is a shark."

I showed this Tumblr to my dad, since we were watching Centurion (which stars Fassbender and his bared teeth), and my mom with complete straight-faced honesty said, "When he is not a shark, he is very nice looking."  (Which, when translated from the UIE [Understated Indian English] is defined as 'smoking hot.')

My mom. My mom thinks Fassy is nice looking. Apparently aesthetic attraction to Michael Fassbender is hereditary. I am merely a victim of my genes.

You can follow the hell out of this Tumblr here.

Stay toothy and dangerous, my friends

So because of the lag across the pond, I watched Sherlock Series 1 E1 (EDIT: S2E1, Fumu is an idiot) a bit late.

Without going into spoilers, OH MY GOD, MY FEELINGS, MY HEART, BBC SHERLOCK. I don't think I was breathing through the entire thing, just sitting there on the edge of my bed with my cheap tinny earphones, my fingers in my mouth, exploding with emotion. I love how all the characters are becoming a family. It gives me such a warm glow inside. I don't know what exactly about them gives me the impression that several months have passed. Perhaps just the way they speak and look after one another, especially the Baker Street trio. (Mrs. Hudson is the loveliest woman ever.) This is SUCH a powerful episode. I'm actually glad they're only doing 3 a season. I don't think I could handle any more.

We never go to the cinema, and since we were on vacation we decided to spend money just this once and did the IMAX 3D Tintin. I don't think the 3D really added much to the film (then again, I am not a big fan of 3D films anyway) but the IMAX was very nice. I don't know about the Tintin character, though. I never really thought "oh, that's Tintin" when I saw him, though they did really well with the other characters. I think it might be because they tried to make Tintin look very human, and he was a bit too skinny. And his eyes were too small. It's a shame, because I think they spend weeks and weeks trying to make Tintin look very genuine. However, the way Tintin moved was perfect. Quick, graceful, and competent-- even in the scenes on the ship where everyone is a shadow or a dimly lit figure, you could tell who was Tintin, and THAT is much more difficult to do. Great job there.

I will not deny I teared up at Haddock's "Don't ever think you're a failure" speech. I could really tell the people who made the film were die-hard fans, and I'm definitely seeing it again. Right after I see Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, which has everyone I would ever want to see in a film together. I'm really glad they chose Tom Hardy to replace Michael Fassbender (OH, T-HARD. BE STILL, MY HEART), but what could this film have been if we'd had all those people AND Fassbender. Oh my god, the world is not ready. *faint*
