Every Family Weekend, when families of students come up to the University of Virginia to visit for a weekend of food and actiivities (and to make sure we haven't roasted and eaten their children?) the University Singers, Virginia Women's Chorus, and Glee Club have a joint concert where we all sing separate pieces and then do three pieces together.

Where we sing: Old Cabell Hall concert hall:

One of these pieces changes every year and two of them are annual songs (Then Thousand Voices and The Good Old Song)

This year we did "The Last Words of David," which has not been posted on YouTube yet, if anyone recorded it at all. It's by Randall Thompson, who may be one of my favourite composers of the 20th century.

"Last Words of David" comes from 2 Samuel 23 (I don't know what the heck this means):

Now these are the last words of David....
The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spoke to me,
He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.
And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth,
even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain.

Last year we did "Make Our Garden Grow" from Candide by Leonard Bernstein, who was one of the most famous students of Randall Thompson. I posted a video here, but have found another one that may have better sound quality.

The last two songs we do are "Ten Thousand Voices" and "The Good Old Song," two songs special to the University of Virginia. "Ten Thousand Voices" is sung at Convocation and probably at graduation. "The Good Old Song" is more well known in the student body and sung many times at parties and football games with the classic arms around each other and the swaying. This song is also sung by the student body during graduation.

(er, yes, that is The School of Athens by Raphael behind us. T_T Sometimes UVa is too 1337 for its own good)
