foolish_m0rtalSo I just finished reading Gore Vidal's The City and The Pillar today, all in one sitting. Or rather, during the train/bus rides around the city. That being said, it is not a lightweight book. You can tell how much I like a book by how fast I read it. I've been trying to read a few classic books for every rubbish book I read, and I just flew through this one.
Wikipedia actually puts it better than I can:
"The City and the Pillar is the third published novel by American writer and essayist Gore Vidal, written in 1946 and published on January 10, 1948. The story is about a young man who is coming of age and discovers his own homosexuality.
The City and the Pillar is significant because it is recognized as the first post-World War II novel whose openly gay and well-adjusted protagonist is not killed off at the end of the story for defying social norms. It is also recognized as one of the "definitive war-influenced gay novels", being one of the few books of its period dealing directly with male homosexuality. In addition, it was among the few gay novels reprinted in inexpensive paperback form as early as the 1950s."
Critics lost their shit over this book, which was the first to overtly address homosexuality during the period. People told Vidal that he could have had a successful brilliant career, but he shot it down when he published the book. Critics panned it and blacklisted him for years, forcing him to write under pseudonyms. And today, decades later, Gore Vidal is a rockstar. Eat it, critics. Eat it and choke.

-Gore Vidal plays the mission director in Gattaca.
-Gore Vidal's real name is Eugene Luther Gore Vidal.
-Jude Law is also in Gattaca, brilliantly playing a bitter wheelchair-bound snarker with frankly massive ho yay with the main character.
-Jude Law's character's name is Eugene
-Jude Law looks EXACTLY THE FUCK LIKE YOUNG GORE VIDAL, seen here on my copy of The City and the Pillar: 
Conclusion: Gore Vidal must have had deep creepy deja vu while working on the set of Gattaca. Also, fangirls are totally justified in thinking Eugene Morrow is gayer than a treeful of monkeys on nitrous oxide. Or at least enthusiastically bisexual. Represent our people, Eugene.
