For [livejournal.com profile] smallfandomfest Round 10.

Title: Big Wolf in the Big City
Author: foolish_m0rtal
Fandom: Big Wolf on Campus
Pairing/Characters: Merton Dingle/Tommy Dawkins
Rating/Category: G
Prompt: the latter years
Notes/Warnings: no warnings or spoilers. This is definitely a fic idea that I've been thinking about for a long time. The details in the background of Banner 2 include a pentagram, computer code, and a representation of the world with ley lines.

Concept: Tommy and Merton graduate from college and move into a small flat in the city. Merton is a technopagan and works in a software startup. Tommy joins Pleasant City's finest and uses his wolf senses to crack unsolvable crimes. At night, Merton and Tommy in his werewolf form fight the supernatural forces of the urban jungle.

Very nicely done! I love the idea and the actual banners. If you ever get around to actually writing something for that idea, please inform me; I would love to read it!

He would be! I can really see BWoC in later years as a supernatural police procedural.
And Tommy would be completely mystified why everyone wanted him on the fireman's calendar. Hehee.

asdlfkasdhjGAH!! This is genius, seriously. It would be like The Sentinel crossed with Buffy and ommigawdIneedthisNOW. Like, the more I think about this, the more I realize this is PERFECT for them and genuinely seems like the natural place they'd up after college. I will so read this. And the banners are awesome! Tommy looks ENTIRELY too good in a policeman's jacket >:]

OMGAWYES!! Wade Wilson is the shiz 8D A totally unkillable, mentally unstable, fourth wall demolishing, non stop chattering mercenary with a total crush on a giant technorganic Jesus wannabe, what's not to like?

And do you plan on writing a fic (or series?) on this were-cop idea? Or are the banners just for fun? (Cause that they are!)

I've started writing the fic, but I don't know much about the police force, so I might have to watch a few procedurals on television before I start to write about Tommy's job. :)

Thank you, I'm glad you like the banners.

Haha, well, I happen to know a lot about police procedure, fancy that! I'm a Criminal Justice major, and most of my professors are ex-cops, investigators, prosecutors, whatnot. So you're more than welcome to pick my brain, or at the very least I can give you recommendations on accurate police shows and warnings about INaccurate ones, lol XD

Wow, thank you very much! I know nothing of criminal justice. The closest I've come to it was my Ethics for Engineers class, which mostly says "don't become one of those people with the killer robots."

Specifically, I'm interested in the everyday life of a regular cop. I planned to have the opening of the story start with Tommy and his partner at the scene of a crime, and I'm not sure how the procedure works for that.

In terms of Tommy's career goals, I don't know if he's the kind of person that would want to make detective and whether he would be suited to the position. I'm also not sure which department he would choose since within the timeline of the story, it couldn't be a position that he would need 8-9 years for like homicide.

For my research, I've mainly been googling and looking up some of the Q&A forums for police departments. Any additional resources you could suggest would be very helpful. Thank you again!

(whoops, long post alert!)

Ethics for Engineers, that sounds really interesting!! ..........and what if we like killer robots?

Hrrm, that's a valid question. Honestly Tommy seems more like the beat cop type, jives with his protective instincts more I think. Cause it's the beat cops that actually respond to calls, patrol the streets, interrupt the rape, chase the burglar, etc. The protective and preventative stuff. Detectives are the guys called later to examine the scene after everything's gone down. They figure out who the bad guy is, but typically the beat cops make the arrest, and it's the beat cops most of the populace interact with. But then again, it's not the beat cops that solve the crimes, which make for great plots. Hmmmm, I suppose there are a few options here:

1) make him a detective anyway, detectives are fun
2) put him on some sort of task force, which depending on the region can be applied to after a year or two of service. Task forces can be as broad as a Drug Task Force (which could certainly suit his senses well) or Violent Crimes, or be as specific as Criminal Gang Homicide Task Force (that'd be LA, lol)
3) keep him a beat cop, but have him solve what he can tell are supernatural crimes on his own. There's bite marks on the victim, the cops write it up as a sexual sadist, but Tommy sees a vampire, and he and Merton solve the real crime after dark.

Technically any of these options can be combined too, lol, and while *personally* I kinda like option three, this is your brainbaby, so if you've already got a direction in mind, by all means go where your muse leads you :D

As for the procedure for the opening crime scene, it totally depends, lol. What kind of crime scene is it? And did they find it and are setting up the scene, or were they called out to it and its already been cordoned off and whatnot?

I was planning on going with #3's premise, actually, so keeping him as a beat cop DOES fit better. Tommy seems more of a lone wolf, pun not intended, so I have him go off more on his own. Thanks for resolving this issue!

In the beginning I intended for them to be called over after the scene's already been cordoned off. However, I'm not sure of the role of beat cops in this situation.

Yay for issue resolution!! I am totally stoked about you writing this, seriously :3

Well, he could be doing any number of things, depending on the crime and what other officers are there. Hmm, this may actually be better suited in a message, otherwise these poor posts are gonna start getting anorexically thin XD
