you get what you pay for
Nov. 30th, 2011 11:19 pmDude, so I've been getting DVDs for Black Friday, and they're slowing being mailed from Amazon. I accidentally had them sent to my parents' house instead of mine, so my dad keeps sending me emails about which packages have arrived.
In today's email, he wrote, "Last two DVDs came today. Fast and the Furious and Drop Dead Gorgeous. Watched the first one. Nothing spectacular. Paul Walker is expressionless." (You know he hates this actor if he actively goes to find his name from IMDB.) He randomly turns into Roger Ebert at times, and I'm not sure how I can explain that Fast and the Furious isn't for watching, it's for drinking games.
Now, I've been a reasonable person and have been telling them which DVDs to watch, things I know they'll enjoy. It's their fault they haven't been listening to me. But let's look at the DVDs I ordered (for ridiculous cheap) and see my motivations for buying them.
To make a better skeleton for this comparison (can you tell I've been working on my engineering thesis), let's give it some metrics: Ho Yay Factor and Intelligent Plot.
My path to shameless shipping is a complex one.

To make a better skeleton for this comparison (can you tell I've been working on my engineering thesis), let's give it some metrics: Ho Yay Factor and Intelligent Plot.
- The Fast and the Furious: ("My brother likes you. Usually he doesn't like anybody.") Ho Yay > Plot
- Tinman: ("Good morning, sweetheart.") Ho Yay <= Plot
- Inception ("Go to sleep, Mr. Eames.") Ho Yay < Plot Sorry, fandom, much as I love you.
- X-Men First Class (Anything involving Charles and Erik sharing screentime) Ho Yay > everything
- The Hitcher 1986 ("You're a smart kid. You'll figure it out.") Ho Yay == Plot Holy shit, guys, you cannot have one without the other.
- Drop Dead Gorgeous (This whole film) Deadpan Black Humour > all the things, No Ho Yay (For all you code savvy people, !Ho Yay)
My path to shameless shipping is a complex one.

Yeah, parents can be difficult to explain to regarding things like that.
XMFC's HoYay is indeed > everything.

Date: 2011-12-02 09:39 am (UTC)I'm in the middle of writing a fic for it right now and hope to have it done in time to submit to smallfandomfest.
I did a fandom pimp for the film at Small Fandom Fest here (http://smallfandomfest.livejournal.com/423313.html) if you're interested in finding some other fans.
