Yes, I know I'm behind, but I've been catching up on other shows too. Still on episode 2. Some thoughts:

- I was really surprised that they cast an American wife. I wonder why? Not complaining, since I like McGovern. She's a very soft character that can be very strong when she needs to be.

- Lord Grantham and Bates having a war buddies vibe.

- Harriet Jones as Isobel Crawley. At first I thought she would be a domineering mother type, but she is such a badass, especially with getting involved in the hospital and sparring with resident boss Maggie Smith as the Dowager.

- Carson and the whole "you will not talk smack about any of Grantham's family" and his obsession with family and personal pride and propriety. That is some Remains of the Day shit right there. But it's nice to see his human side later on. I wonder why they didn't get beaten? Seems unusual, especially since O'Brien bad-mouthed Cora right after she left in front of everyone.

- Speaking of odd things, the servants quarters are unusually roomy and nice. I toured the Vanderbilt summer "cottage," the Breakers over the summer, and their servants quarters were shit. Not sure if they were purposely trying to show that the Crawleys are unbelievably benevolent. Like Sherlock's flat, it was probably for the camera crews so they would have more room to film.

- Odd thing number three: Cora and Lord Grantham sharing a bed. What was the point in history when married couples shared rooms and beds instead of having their own rooms?

- Team Rocket== Thomas the footman and O'Brien the ladyship's maid. Holy crap. They are so bad, yet watching them is so good. Evil smoke breaks: do your schemers have them? I also LOVED the whole image of Thomas with his sleeves rolled up fixing a clock. Not sure what I liked about it. I think I could see him as that kind of character in an alternate universe where he was only a tiny bit evil.

- Speaking of Thomas the footman. Dude is like evil!Batman. I watch him through my fingers, because I know he's about to do despicable things, but I can't look away. I should have been amused that Thomas's sekrit gay fling out-bastarded him, but I felt sorry for him instead. TV, stop making villains hot.

- I love how the servants watch Matthew Crawley serving himself food and dressing himself, and instead of being nice about it, they're like, "That shit's weird. Why is he doing that?" And I love how Matthew makes his valet feel valued and wanted. Big Awww moment.

- I kept humming the main theme from the Piano all day and didn't realise why till I discovered that a bit of the opening and closing theme to Downton Abbey sounds really similar.

- The operation with the adrenaline for the dropsy patient was the tensest operation I have ever witnessed ever. I was like, "Please let this fictional character live and prove a point to the Dowager."

- BATES. I adore Bates. I have no idea why, but he's just wonderful. Maybe because he keeps to himself and isn't involved in any of the servant politics. And his adorable awkward friendship with Anna. So. Cute.

- Can't talk any more. New episode is coming up.
