Podcast of Interest
Mar. 4th, 2012 05:03 pmSelf-congratulatory bullshit that tries to boost the egos and perceived IQs of the hosts. Why the fuck am I not surprised? It's all analysis and shit, which sure, is sometimes cool, but if I wanted a play by play of the entire episode, I would just watch the episode. Their feed is here if you want to take a listen.
The podcasts aren't that bad, but personally I would rather go read Vallegirls tvgasm recaps. EDIT: the old ones. The new recaps seem kind of bitter and mean. You can poke fun at the show, you don't have to be crazy for everything in the show, but there doesn't seem to be any underlying love in their new stuff.
Note: I was listening to the podcast for Number Crunch, which is like, my favourite episode EVER, along with Super. And one of the podcasters posited that Ingram inserts his consciousness into the machine. "Oh, like Star Wars," the other one said, and I shouted "NO!" before I even knew what I was doing. It is not fucking Star Wars. If they are referring to Darth Vader, he is still a dude in a suit. Maybe something like Ghost in the Shell or the database in Doctor Who's "Silence in the Library" would be a more apt comparison. Maybe even the Magi in Neon Genesis Evangelion. But just. Arg. No. I was just sitting there fuming about that for reasons I still don't completely understand. Proably because everyone thinks all science fiction is Star Wars.

Date: 2012-03-04 11:45 pm (UTC)For me, a large part of my disdain has to do with a sort of overall principle sort of thing? IDK. Basically, women's interests and women's hobbies tend to be undervalued and condescended to, while men's interests and hobbies are validated and considered legitimate. I've seen so much mainstream stuff that essentially goes HOLY SHIT WOMEN LIKE THINGS????? and it all tends to come from men, so I'm pretty much automatic side eye when it comes to men being fannish, because it's like a whole bunch of chicks liking a show doesn't mean anything, but if one dude likes it, then OOOOH well, that's REAL interest.
Basically, the whole world is essentially men being smug about themselves, and fandom is one of the few places where it's women-dominate, women's interests are validated and I'd rather go read 100 LJ entries by other fangirls squealing over PoI, where our interests align and we can talk about Caviezel being hot while also discussing the themes of the show, rather than two dudes podcast about it, who will most likely NOT talk about how hot Caviezel is and probably act very smug about themselves and their brilliance.
And later
It's a long held theory of mine that that's the reason why women-centred fandom and fanfic is so threatening. We seek to transform the source material. Men's fandom tend to be all about collecting, imitating, and consuming. Not that we don't do that as well, but we add that "change" component to it.
Not trying to make a gender divide in fandom, since I know a few really amazingly kickass male-identified people in fandom, but I have perceived this pattern in the Podcast of Interest series.
Warning: rant about off topic stuff
Date: 2012-03-05 01:50 am (UTC)I don't understand geeks who are like, "Yeah, my girlfriend doesn't understand my sci fi hobbies grumble grumble." THEN GET ANOTHER GIRLFRIEND.
START RANT, skip to end if you wish
There is also this weird support for creepy manpain. For example, someone in my literary society read aloud from Love in the Time of Cholera about this guy who saw a girl in passing and immediately fell in love with her, going so far as to following her around and staring at her from afar. It was written in a really sympathetic light, and I'm just like THAT IS STALKING. There is an expectancy that a girl should give a guy the time of day because he's interested in her, and she shouldn't hurt his feelings, which is bullshit.
END RANT
I am seriously contemplating asking angstbunny to do a distaff podcast with me for the upcoming Baby Blue episode for Person of Interest. Because the guys in this podcast totally missed some things I wanted to hear about.
