Some author view on fanfiction

Here at Oh No They Didn't. I understand their point of view, but most fans understand that they are playing in someone else's sandbox and aren't after things like monetary gain. People aren't in fandom for the money. I was sort of surprised and a little hurt by how angry many of them sounded.

I think one commenter said it best when they posted:

I hate to agree with Whedon, but that's a damn good quote.

John Rogers also has pretty much the best viewpoint of fanfic ever, and I wish every single person can adopt his view. (I quoted it here in case you haven't seen it before)

Whedon's got it right, which is why i really love his work. He's always been a good friend to the fans. he's right that fanfic is mostly done for love of the characters, by 99% of said fans.

Even in the more obscure fandoms,it runs true to form. I can't imagine not writing, for the stronger muse voices in my head.

I really don't understand the whole commercial aspect. Like, I've literally never heard of fans publishing their fanfiction. The corporate world is so fucking stupid, because they don't seem to understand the interaction of fans. Allowing fans to create fanfiction and fanvids is, at least for me, a major source of getting into tv shows and books and movies. It helps market what they want to sell, but they just can't seem to get past the pre-internet idea of what a copyright means. Which all the fans seem to understand, but most writers and corporations don't.

Also, if I ever published fiction and people write fanfic about it? I don't care how shitty it is, I would be absolutely floored and emotion. It would probably be more validating to me than actually getting published.
