Are there any 'Canadian-isms' or slang I should consider if I'm writing a fic based in your beautiful country? (Just realised that I've been writing Big Wolf on Campus as if it were in America when it's actually a Canadian show. Probably because of the Commie Dawkins episode.)There are Brit-pickers and Yank-wankers, but I've never seen a call for Canadian betas (Eh-sayers?) so I thought I would ask.

A lot of us are pretty Americanized. Any stereotypical "Canadian-ism" is going to stick out as, well, stereotypical. "Eh", "aboot". A lot of US shows are filmed in Canada because we're so good at passing for American. Regional can matter. Canada's a big country. Big Wolf on Campus is "generic" right? No specifics on exactly where? So it shouldn't make a huge difference.

Exactly! I have no idea exactly where BWoC is filmed, and most glaring Canadian stereotypes seem to be generated by Americans and better left to the quirky ironic self-awareness that is the due South fandom. I don't see much difference in the U.S. and Canadian shows I watch aside from place. Just didn't want to 'Americanise' a Canadian place.

I'm trying to think of a place Tommy would move if he were interested in theatre and the performing arts, so I went with Vancouver. Solid choice?

Yeah, unless you're after a specific canadian atmosphere you really don't need to use it. Unless you're in a specific fandom like The Listener which is outright in Toronto, you won't have to worry. If BWOC was generic, it shouldn't be a worry. Canada's got the little differences, but it generally serves great for filming US shows. Which have been done over there for a long time.

I loved Endgame for that reason, because it really showcases the city instead of doing a 'generic skyline' sweep.

Also love your icon.

Vancouver's a great city to use. The island is very attractive to hippy types as well. I have an old family friend living there and she's been there for about a decade. Unfortunately i couldn't give you specific detail about it.

Yesh, i love McShep. I'll be loyal to them forever. ^_^ The bickering between them is exactly like my parents. My dad was american, my mom is the canuck. Thank you!

THAT IS PRECIOUS! McShep was my first real fandom OTP, and they'll always be a favourite. So excited for the annual mcshep_match this summer!

the fandom is unstoppable. I love that its still active as can be, and happily so. Four years after the show ended, it still chugs happily onwards. I made a lot of friends in it.

I was a hardcore lurker on that fandom and never got around to writing any fic myself. I wish I'd been more actively involved in it, but I guess stories need readers and comments too. ^_^

I couldn't write in it myself, but i commented quite a bit and lurked the rest of the time. ^_^ I was far too intimidated by the physics.

I was catching up with all the old episodes at that time and didn't have time to watch new ones, so for me it was an issue of not being as entrenched in the canon as I usually like to be when writing fic.

It was freaking amazing how in-depth people could write about complicated fictional science. I was always in awe of that. That was probably what I liked most about Stargate and its fandoms, the way it celebrated its scientists and engineers.

Oh i know. Hence why it was so intimidating. I barely got through basic physics, and passed algebra by the skin of my teeth. My talents are music and words, not numbers. So i was quite happy to be a lurker and comment away on the good stuff, with other people more willing and able to write those fics.

SG always loved its geeks, and for the most part they are pretty positive about the military too. I loved the pairing of grunt/geek cause it allowed for both to mess up and then save each others asses all the time. John and Rodney were the best example of that, while bickering like Bing Crosby and Bob Hope did across two galaxies. :D

That's part of the reason I stopped watching SGU, which I know is a contentious topic in the franchise. One of the first episodes had a soldier kick Dr. Rush in the ribs while he was down, and I was like, oh HELL no.

he did what? oh hell no, no no no. Edgier does not mean cruel to your geeks--EVER. Even when they deserve crap like that. As much as Rodney pushed those kinds of buttons, he never got hit. Good thing i never really did watch SGU. I'm still figuring i will, but if that's the way one of the essential geeks gets treated? That doesn't bode well to me even liking it.

Yeah there's no real need to have a specific Canadian-ness unless there is a specific setting.

Vancouver is perfect. It's dubbed "Hollywood North". I don't mind helping with Vancouver-ness. I live there. :-D

Hmm, I *might* ask you to look over chapter 4 of Romanticus Interruptus when I've finished it. I think I'm going to make it as generic as possible in keeping with the show, but nevertheless.

Any good community theatres in the Vancouver suburbs that you know of?
