Stargate Universe preview: (the real one, not the fake X-treme Wormhole ad they had going for a while)

The Previously unknown purpose of the "Ninth Cheveron" is revealed, and ends up taking a team to an Ancient ship "Destiny", a ship built millions of years ago by the Ancients, used to seed Distant galaxies with Stargates. This team, led by Dr. David Rush and Colonel Everet Young, are trapped on the ship, unable to change its programmed mission, and encounter new races, new technology and new enemies, as the runaway ship takes them to the far ends of the Universe.

So basically this is like "The Daedalus Variations" (P.S. one of my favourite SGA 5th season episodes) combined with Star Trek: Voyager. "Oh no, Colonel- we're in the frakking Delta Quadrant!"

Please.

First Trailer

Second Trailer

Ye-ah, so basically the trailers tell us nothing but *scream scream* "We're not supposed to be here."

The cast:

Stargate Universe stars (from top left) Camille Wray; Colonel Everett Young; Sgt. Ronald Greer; Lt. Matthew Scott; Colonel Telford; Sgt. Tamara Johansen; Eli Wallace; Chloe Armstrong; and Dr. Nicholas Rush.

NICHOLAS RUSH
Title: Doctor
Played By: Robert Carlyle

When a group of scientists and soldiers find themselves trapped on an Ancient ship in the far reaches of space, Dr. Rush works to unlock the mysteries of the Ancient ship Destiny and return the group home. But evidence of his ulterior motives soon arises.
Um, okay...I can maybe deal with that

EVERETT YOUNG
Rank: Colonel
Played By: Justin Louis

Colonel Young requested to serve the remainder of his commission on Earth upon marrying his wife, Hailey, two years ago, but for now he commands a secret off-world base. The loss of two members of his team several years ago has taught him to be prepared for anything.
AKA: amalgam of Sheppard, Mitchell, and Lorne

MATTHEW SCOTT
Rank: Lieutenant
Played By: Brian J. Smith

Green and rough around the edges, Lt. Scott is thrust into the role of leader well before he is ready for the responsibility. He must learn to command, earn the respect of his people through action, and manage the diverse personalities aboard the ship.
AKA: see above/see Sheppard assuming military command after death of Sumner

TAMARA JOHANSEN
Rank: Master Sergeant
Played By: Alaina Huffman

Beautiful, tough, and from a modest background, Tamara joined the Air Force when she couldn’t afford medical school. With only paramedic-level training, she ends up being the most medically inclined person on the ship — but is overwhelmed by her lack of knowledge and experience.
AKA: Alternate universe Keller. What do you bet she and Eli end up having an awkward painful no chemistry relationship?

ELI WALLACE
Civilian
Played By: David Blue

Eli is a total slacker … who just happens to be an utter genius with anything he puts his mind to, be it computers, mathematics, video games, or anything else. A lack of confidence has left him with an acerbic sense of humor.
AKA: Young!McKay. Really, people? This is like replacing L with Mello and Near. I know fans liked McKay, but Christ on a bicycle, don't clone him.

CHLOE ARMSTRONG
Civilian
Played By: Elyse Levesque

Stunning and sexy, Chloe is the daughter of a U.S. Senator. She had a silver spoon upbringing and is a little spoiled … but politically and socially savvy. She dreams of following in her father’s footsteps, but the dire circumstances of being trapped on a spaceship seriously tests her character.
What does this have to do with anything. "Stunning and sexy," wtf? Does she know how to fire a P-40? Or fix a Jumper? Nope. Does she even have the Ancient gene? Who knows? This is like Teyla without the bamf fighting skills+bratty!Elizabeth Weir. Seems like that chick from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

RONALD GREER
Rank: Master Sergeant
Played By: Jamil Walker Smith

Sergeant Greer is a Marine with an explosive temper that he finds hard to control. His past is a mystery, but it’s clear that something dark formed the hard shell around him. He’d rather take the fight to the enemy than stand still.
AKA: This is goddamn Ronon Dex! I am no idiot. He doesn't have a cool energy gun, though.

CAMILLE WRAY
Civilian
Played By: Ming-Na

A human resources executive with the international organization with oversight of the Stargate program, Wray finds herself on the Destiny very much against her will. She believes her opinion should carry a lot of weight with Dr. Rush and Colonel Young. Probably a recurring character.
AKA: WOOLSEY. This is like shooting fish in a barrel.

TELFORD
Rank: Colonel
Played By: Lou Diamond Phillips

A lifelong military man, Colonel Telford is the chosen leader of the ill-fated expedition. But things don’t go quite as planned when an enemy attacks the secret research base from which his long-awaited mission was to launch. Possibly recurring or a guest star for the 3-hour premiere.

Uh, SUMNER, anybody? Anybody at all?

One commendable thing I saw: Stargate finally outs its gay characters

Star Trek tried, but no cigar. Okay, so there's Sulu, but Sulu's actor actually was the one who said he interpreted him like that. (I wonder why...)
Star Trek Enterprise toyed with that for Malcolm Reed, but again, it didn't go through.

Apparently:

"Stargate Atlantis did have a few gay characters itself, at least in the minds of the producers — though it never made it onto the screen. Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi has stated that character of Alicia Vega was written to be a lesbian (story). (she was supposed to ask Keller out. That would have been kind of cute...) But after her introduction in the Season Five premiere, she was quickly killed off in just her second appearance (“Whispers”).

Mallozzi also said that there was another character on Atlantis he always thought was gay, though the right time (read: not forced) to reveal it on screen never materialized."

He says it's a recurring character, so I'm not sure if it means that in the sense of recurring/main character or recurring vs. one or two episode character.
Money says it's Lorne. Gut says it's Sheppard, but if that's actually true, it's never NEVER going to see the light of day.

McKay: "Sheppard, there are a surprising lack of hot girls in your dreams."

Riiight.

Side Note: Actually, it probably can't be someone in the military, because then he would get kicked out, and I don't think the Stargate franchise would dally with hot issues like that. Other guesses have been Chuck the technician (sure, why not?) and Dr. Zelenka (???).
