The one with the webcomics
Jul. 2nd, 2009 12:03 pmBecause I'm still working on a showcase piece for white asparagus, my creme brulee post, the audiobook I'm making for Penelope, and my second piece for
smallfandomfest . (I can't get the story to MOVE, damn it! I just need some filler! Shoot it in the head!)
And because I also like webcomics.
Dinosaur Comics

And a comic I was considering for a showcase post: Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal.

Advanced apologies for people who worship SMBC. I know you guys fight wars over this stuff.
So I liked SMBC in the beginning. Many of the comics are smart and funny and examine aspects of popular/nerd culture in a great way.

Then maybe the guy went through a breakup or something, because many of the comics later on carried the same punchline. The guy tells the girl she is ugly and/or she has to lose weight. I really thought that was in bad taste, and not because I have vested interest. That kind of punchline works maybe once, and I didn't consider it the funniest punchline anyway.

If the insults are crazy or nerdy (ex. "You're a fishmonger" [Hamlet], "I wave my private parts at your aunties" [Monty Python], or "Bene Gesserit witch!" [Dune]) then I will find that amusing. But straight up insults are childish and ridiculous.

And this is a recurring theme in the comic; these are part of a whole slew of similarly toned comics. Maybe it's some kind of joke I'm not getting? Again, it's not vested interest; I wouldn't find it any funnier or endure it any more if it were a girl telling a guy he was ugly or had to lose weight. On top of this, all the women he draws are pretty okay, and I've seen a lot of perfectly normal people look at how they 'should look' and obsess over it when they really shoudn't. Even if the guy feels he has to justify his own manliness by insulting the woman, do it with style. Give her a robot arm and then have him shoot some kind of Terminator or Cylon insult at her. ("It's over, toaster.") And even if you ARE a person who doesn't like the way you look, this content is especially cruel towards you. This guy has to understand that no one's perfect, and people don't care. Perfect people are creepy.
I don't know if these particular comics are supposed to make the women look bad or make the men look like jerks, nor do I care. I just think they're tactless, and without these, SMBC would be better.
