Okay, so I'm writing a fic about The Great Gatsby. It's about Nick after he moves back Midwest. As you remember, he moved back to get rid of the memories of Gatsby and the Buchanans, since the East seems so haunted to him.
In this story, he can't seem to keep the past out of his life. The fic is supposed to be a creepy thriller kind of fic, actually.
Never done one of those before! ^_^

So, I'm looking for a title for this thing. Working title is Refraction (it was supposed to be Birefringence, but whatever)
So, if anyone replies, I'll tell you more about the plot and maybe you can help me!

*twitches slightly* How ironic that as soon as my English class finishes Gatsby and I find out I got a 70% on the paper, you decide to write fic.

oh well. Write away^^ I'll probably understand it better than the book.

yays. Su, you want me to tell you more about the fic?

k. Well, Nick has moved back to Chicago. Taken up a job as an accountant. He's trying to get away from what happened in the east, but it just keeps pulling him back. He has Myrtle's puppy with him, so that's kind of like a constant reminder anyway.
I...well, there's not a really good way for me to explain this, but Nick starts talking to people from the east.
You know, when you're alone, sometimes you talk to your friends, as if they're there, even when they're not? Kind of like that.
So, Nick starts talking to Gatsby.
Through that, I talk about different parts of the book that I noticed could have alternate meanings.
I also try to give Gatsby a liberation from being Jay Gatsby. You see more of the kind of person Nick saw when he said "You're worth the whole damn bunch put together."

Anyway, the because of the slipping of masks and the unravelling of secrets and whatnot, the story becomes more of a chiller kind of fic.
It's slightly slashy, but I'm trying to downplay that.

That sounds cool. I'm liking the talking to dead people thing. It's kinda like an imaginary friend...except he was real...at one point.

exactly! and Myrtle's dog is so kyute and Tom and Daisy enter the story again at one point, and it's soooo exciting for me! I mean, it's like I'm reading the story for the first time myself when I write it out. I really have no idea what's going on, at this point ahahaha. @_@

I mean, if NICK would just stop being lazy and start the frigging story *hint hint, Mr. Carraway!!* then I could start reading it, but NOOOO. What an absolute jerk!

lol indeed, friend.
Questing-Beasts is actually screaming my name right now. Kuro and Gabriel just got into this terrific fist-fight.
Except, it kind of solved nothing.
Gabriel just goes and spits blood out into the sink and then comes back. and then he and Kuro are like, "So...what are we supposed to do now? Not like...either of us won.."

XD The idea of pretty boy Gabriel fighting amuses me highly.

Date: 2007-06-11 06:14 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] foolish-m0rtal.livejournal.com
Well, that's the thing. It SHOULD make sense, since in the manga, Gabriel is fighting in the Aquarian Age. But I dunno- that's the curse/advantage of the bishie. People always underestimate you.
Anyway, I got kind of sick of Gabriel being thought of as this pretty mystical magic-kid. In Questing Beasts, he and Kuro have to go around the world killing monsters, so he's pretty tough. In that particular fic, I actually make fun of the whole magic-kid assumption. At first, Kuro's like zOMG, this guy is a FOREIGNER. What am I supposed to do?
and then he finds out that Gabriel is just a normal guy like everybody else.
He's not a weird foreign creature. He's not some supersonic omniscient I-can-do-everything guy.
He and Kuro just go around doing their jobs as best as they can, sometimes making really big mistakes and getting on each others' nerves, and almost getting each other killed.
And there are definitely some parts where they start to lose it and cave under the pressure, and later on, they're like, "Hey, don't tell my friends about that; I'd never live it down."
"Okay. If we get back to headquarters alive, I promise I won't say a word."

That sounds neat. What kind of monsters do they go after? Is it kinda like Dark Priest in a way?

Date: 2007-06-15 01:50 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] foolish-m0rtal.livejournal.com
not like...darrrrk monsters, like in Dark Priest. That's sticking more to vapyres, demons, etc. More...how shall we say this without offending...more Christianized views on what monsters are? *gets attacked by priests swinging censers and rosaries*

QB monsters are like...more folklorish kinds of monsters. I mean, all of the monsters stay true to their names. The monsters, as a set, are called the Zodiac. I reiterate, this was my play on words (Aquarian Age and whatnot). So like...the monsters at their core have traits of their names, but just because a monster is...let's say, a Leo, it doesn't mean that it has to manifest itself as a lion. Some of the monsters are humanoid, some are animal, some are this weird cross of both. I would list some more different ones, but that would give away some of the chapters. ^_^

Aha.
See...because I only got into AP this year, I got to avoid reading that book...*sweatdrop*

But I ahve been fanficcing a lot lately...so maybe you'll forgive me when I get up "Gluttony" (I'm very proud of it...and I think I've finally gone over the crack deep end with Kasei/Ama-Inu. I blame Fyredra.)

However, anything you write is teh win in my book...so maybe I should devote two hours and read the Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby is actually one of the more amazing books we've been forced to read. I like Fitzgerald's style.

Eh...I'm a massive Wilde fan...that kind of makes things difficult for most stuff...
But I have time now...and I just cleaned my room...
hmmm...

Gatsby here I come!

yay

Just please don't believe all those hacks who say Gatsby and Daisy are *meant to be togeether!* (flowers)

NO.

The entire book is about how they are totally incompatible. Daisy is such a ditz, grumble grumble.

Anyway, once you get further into the book, would you let me rant about Nick Carraway? It would please me much.

Ah, how could I leave my poor friend hanging? *grin*
I'll read it then--you always seem to deal well with my various spontaneous "OMG! Inspired!" moments after all. *grin*

Now where'd I put that damn thing...

haha.
Everyone in that book is just so full of irony. I think my favourite line is Even till now, I am one of the most honest people I ever known.
Or something like that.
Basically, Nick starts off the book by saying he's never been critical of people because his father taught him not to be.
And then, he proceeds, throughout the entire book, to pass judgment on everyone, all the while totally denying that he is.

Hmm...I am still partially through the book, and in addition to it being as amusingly hypocritical as anything I might ever write, I think it's more of a documentation of an area (I instincitvely started typing "eraser"...now that's sad...) in which Crowley was perfectly successful and unopposed!
Crowley: Oh look! MORE adulterers! *smirk*
Aziraphale: *glare* You really ARE enjoying this far too much...

I can totally see Good Omens rewritten as The Great Omens, with Nick and Gatsby as knock-off Aziraphale and Crowley.

Terrific crossover: Crowley is one of the guests at Gatsby's weekly parties. ^_^

It explains all the adulteries at least...Aziraphale's busy trying to make sure the pastries are still excellent... *snicker*

And SCONES. *melt*

Feheheh. I'm the meativore, I'm afraid. I'm not much of one for baked goods. I can't bake to save my life, but I make a soup to DIE for...

Scones? Eh...I can manage scones, but barely. I'm just not much of one for sweets...
Really...Tea's okay as long as they don't get after me to "have a biscuit." Nyeh.

ah, you do too much for me, NF. ^_^ How far are you in the book?

I looked up Great Gatsby on wikipedia; apparently, Capote was going to make a version of the movie in which both Nick and Jordan were gay. Wouldn't that just mess up their sidestory completely? XD
Really, my friends and I were saying that if Gatsby treated Daisy like he did Nick, he would have been happier with her.
I would totally have loved being Gatsby's neighbour. I mean, come on! You get taken out for a drive, and then lunch, AND then he sends over flowers. That would be amazing!!

Not far, I'm afraid--my brother needs to steal it because HE actually has to read it for school *cracks up* Plus...er...Ragshiel's been distracting.
Oniel: *looms ominously* You find my brother distracting do you?

Heh. If I want gay side story, I stick to Dorian Gray, personally. trying to reinterperete things gets really sticky, especially when you go into stuff like Twelfth Night There's a really iffy version somewhere where you have girl-disguised-as-boy-with-moustache antics... (She looked so much like Tsukasa Amou it was disturbing. I have to find that movie again sometime...*cracks up*)

Despite how I may act, I'm not teh brainless fanirl who'll do anything for shounan-ai. I'm just a little starved in my fandom of choice at the moment, that's all.
And I've kind of given up on ever writing Gabriel/Kuro of my own. It's very tragic. T_T So I kind of..er...am probably being a little pushy towards you, what with you being my favorite writer and all. *sweatdrop* Your writing's...satisfying, though. I can see all sorts of thought behind it, so it's not just "oh, I feel like writing an epic and getting a fabulous morale boost! WOOHOO! Let's whore for reviews by having men slobber over eachother!"
I'm just more fond of tragic-edged one-sided stuff because I'm a cynic when it comes to romance. *evil grin* (I DID catch the "questing beasts" reference to arthurian legend, though I might nto have mentioned it...You were made to read oh...waht was it called the once and present king, weren't you? I can't rememebr the exact title at the moment...argh. You get my point though, right? Smashing book, and smashing title for a fantastical eraser'n'mindbreaker kick serious ass sort of fic. ^_^ Skunky approves!)

But anyway, no pressure from me. I'll go to lengths to read more of your stuff! FEAR NOT! *heroic pose*
I'll finish the book, and stop putting it off like a sissy, already.

ah, haha. I'm glad you don't think of my writing as whore-fiction.
The Once and Future King? YES. I tried reading the whole thing and couldn't get through it. I read bits of it though. I loved "no hair and no next-of-skin."
ah. I am also a cynic. When you say Romance novel, I think of it in 18th century terms, when it used to mean a dark supernatural element to the book. (HAWTHORNE!!! Though, I don't really like how he puts down the book characters who think with their heads and not with their hearts.)

No, if you want whore-fiction jsut wait until C10
tracer: Not what she meant. Blood-whores don't count.
NF: well give me some credit here for trying...

THAT'S IT! Once and future King! I read the whole thing. *ehehe*

You're thinking Edgar allen Poe's interpretation of "romance" then. *snicker* (er...well...if you odn't like Hawthorne's head-thinking people I'm amazed you're still talking to me. Isn't Control filled with thinking with your head and screaming with your heart? I read through Scarlet letter and I kept thinking "Dimmesdale must be an early relative of Tomonori")
