I wish I had the guts to do this
Jan. 7th, 2010 06:45 pmThis kid is awesome! He does covers of old jazz songs, mostly Sinatra. He has a pretty smooth even voice, good for jazz. (Mine has a little bit of vibrato in it from musical theatre, much as I've tried to iron it out with choir. I guess vibrato sounds a little better on a woman, so I shouldn't compare)
I should get an old 1950s dress and do some Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn. Mm, Anita O'Day, maybe. I don't have the pipes for Fitzgerald, and there are few I know who do, I will admit readily.
He sounds very good when it's just his voice and no video, though the videos are fun too. Maybe he gets nervous? I know I sure would. The only critique I have is that sometimes he's a little too staccato should carry over more for fluidness and variety, but he did that pretty well on Luck Be a Lady Tonight. And I don't know if this is a deliberate key change, but I have a feeling he's going sharp as the song goes on, and then he realises it and tries to go back down. Thoughts?
Anyway, I was giggling like a little girl throughout this entire song.
But hjaltalin's cover is also totally awesome. It reminds me a lot of The Format's style. I can totally picture Nate Ruess covering this. (Do it, Nate!)
