I'm not sure how many of you watch Castle. My suite has been following it for some time, mostly because I made them watch Firefly, and now we kind of TV stalk all the Firefly cast.
It's an interesting show- there were times I had wished it wasn't just The Castle and Beckett show, and we got to know some of the other characters. Like I swear, their other two partners Ryan and Esposito were sometimes just there as a Disembodied Voice (I know it's called something else on TV Tropes, but I have no idea how to find it) to bring up things that needed to be said in order to solve a case.
Now that Ryan and Esposito (aka Rosencrantz and Guildenstern aka The Two Stooges aka The Ambiguously Gay Duo) are getting more character development, S. Deaver, who plays Kevin Ryan has found the world of fanfiction.
WHY? WHY WOULD YOU EVER DO THAT? I thought everyone knew not to encourage the fangirls...(fan and fangirl are not the same thing. You know the difference. I would like to hold that it is the same with fanfiction and...I'm just making up a word here, fangirlfiction. But you know what I mean, because you can recognise 'fangirlfiction' when you see it, can't you?)
If I were an actor, I wouldn't want to KNOW what people were writing about me, and who they were writing me with. But apparently this is such an open joke that it's okay. People who I didn't think even KNEW about fanfiction knew about this and thought it was hysterical.

Yes, that link is from the Castle commentary option for the Suicide Squeeze episode. Not only has Dever discovered Ryan/Esposito slash, but apparently one of the writers has sworn to him that he wouldn't rest till Resposito fanfiction eclipsed Beckett/Castle fanfiction. (he says he's still working on this. Jose Molina writing fanfiction? Really? Well, I suppose if nothing else, it'll be classy. I wonder how much writers check out fandoms for ideas. Is there a designated fanfiction checker on the payroll of every show?)
Does anyone else find it totally hilarious yet completely squicky that actors know about their own character's fanfictions? (I apologise on behalf of the fanfiction community, Mr. Shatner and Mr. Nimoy). It doesn't help that Dever seems a bit enthusiastic about this (??) and already has a fictional blog up that documents each epiosode from Ryan's point of view. (it's pretty cool, actually. I think it does a good job fleshing out the background characters)
Dever knows what's up. It's just like in the old show Lost in Space when Johnathan Harris knew his character, Zachary Smith, would be written off after the first season, so he deliberately worked around his lines to make his character interesting to get the fans to like him. He ended up being one of the show's best characters and stayed on for the entire series. I'm sure Dever figures making Ryan and Esposito more interesting for the fans (they've done a good job of working around their given lines too) will earn the characters a longer stay. Right now, people suspect one of them is going to be killed off. I'm sure Dever's desperate to make the characters interesting FAST.
Because Dever has ostensibly given his blessing, the Respositan fanfics have grown exponentially. I wish I had a set of data points to do some analysis. I set the Ryan Esposito tags on FF.net about two months ago just for the hell of it to see if anyone was strange enough to bother with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. I found say, eight stories. Now there are...jeez. There's even a
ryanandesposito Ficathon on LJ. (okay, so I signed up as a beta- it was just too fucking funny, and I couldn't resist, and I like to beta anyway)I'm pretty sure the actor's read at least one of the fics from this comm. Completely weird- I would never write for a comm if I thought the actors read the stuff. (maybe it's better that I don't know...)
On a totally side geek note: really nice job on the comm layout in such a short amount of time. (it was created...last month?) I'm part of comms that STILL don't have their shit together even after being around for years. *eyeroll*
Anyway, I hope you know exactly what you've done, Dever. Because you can never take it back.
This may be the only entry that has both the Fail and Win tags. Because I really can't decide...
