Summary: There are some things Watanuki doesn't want to know
Notes: for
“Don’t you want to know who she was?” Yuuko had asked him, but Watanuki didn’t ask.
He didn’t want to see the woman he’d met in the park as anything other than what she’d been to him- he didn’t want to know her name.
He didn’t want to ever see that particular little frown on Himawari’s face again, the expression that had made her look sad and old with one hand resting gently on his back as he’d coughed and coughed and couldn’t stop. It was the first time she’d shown it to him, but he knew there were other times when she thought he wasn’t looking, and he couldn’t bear to ask her why. Because she was bright and beautiful and he always found himself turning his face up to her presence and following her wherever she went as if he were the flower and she the sun.
He didn’t want Doumeki to know he’d been awake that night after he’d been in bed recovering from the strange consumption the woman had given him. When Doumeki had spoken to Yuuko in a low voice in the next room and then come in silently. When he’d put his clenched fist on top of Watanuki’s chest and said, “Don’t you dare do that to me ever again,” and Watanuki had felt his hand trembling even through the sheets and his warm breath stirring his hair.
And Watanuki had wondered if Doumeki was going to kiss him. Except he hadn't wanted to know that either, so he'd turned his head and made a sleepy sound. And then Doumeki had just stood up and walked out silently, leaving Watanuki feeling both satisfied and frustrated because Doumeki never gave away a thing, which was absolutely fine. Except when it wasn't.
And he especially didn’t want to know about the woman Himawari called great-aunt, who had been lost long ago after the death of her only child by some strange illness the doctors had not been able to diagnose. She had been a strange woman, people had said, but pitiable. A widow so soon after her wedding, a grieving mother, a lonely friend whose acquaintances and neighbours had left her so suddenly. Nothing extraordinary- a housewife trapped in a kitchen fire, the local priest collapsing from a heart attack, a passing truck that had come at the wrong time.
And one day she was gone, just some small things missing from her house and a neat little note waiting for them in the parlour. She had been a kind woman like that, always considering others before herself. They didn’t know where she had gone, though they searched for months. Perhaps onto the railroad tracks or off the high rooftops in the city. Perhaps into the pond in the park.

Note: Is it bad that I found the thought of Himawari's great aunt accidentally killing Doumeki's grandfather hi-larious?

Date: 2011-03-19 03:06 am (UTC)Though I must admit, I have lost my taste for tragic fics after the end of holic. I sort of want to write happy stories for a little while to combat the sad ending.

Date: 2011-03-19 04:20 am (UTC)I like that a lot. I'm not really partial to women primarily showing up as love interests. Usually it makes the character shallow and doesn't allow the female character to develop beyond just a love-interest for the main character.
GO, Adler!

Date: 2011-03-19 04:33 am (UTC)I would really like to see Mummy Holmes, perhaps because so many fics have her as Matron Badass.

Date: 2011-03-19 04:37 am (UTC)Oh Mummy Holmes would be interesting (I especially enjoy the crack crossovers where she's M from James Bond), but there are some indications we might find out more about the Holmes patriarch since Cumberbatch had hinted at something in one of the commentaries.

Date: 2011-03-19 04:42 am (UTC)I read a series that hinted Mycroft was the first M from James Bond and the Diogenes Club was a front for the British Secret Service. Good stuff.
