Title: The Scales and the Sword
Fandom: The Hitcher (1986)
Pairing: John Ryder/Jim Halsey, secondary Nash/OMC
Length: ~40K
Note: Accompanying fanart by [livejournal.com profile] mandraco. Endless thanks to [livejournal.com profile] missaffliction for the beta.
Warnings: Dubious consent, canon-typical violence, unhealthy relationship
Summary: Jim loves how law is the scales of justice instead of the sword, but John Ryder may convince him that swords have their uses and nothing about jurisprudence is black and white.

Today at a brunch I met a lesbian who looks like Emma Thompson and lives in a 1900s rowhouse that she is keen on selling, so I got a bunch of beautiful furniture for quite cheap. And she was like, you like to bike? You want to go biking? And I was like I WILL FOLLOW YOU ANYWHERE. And then had Remains of the Day flashbacks.

Sitting on my newly assembled couch with a slice of warm Maine blueberry pie and a beer (my birthday dinner). I swear, buying cheap from Target was not worth this. Their customer support is extremely rude and gives contradictory statements when you try to straighten out your order, they ar incredibly atronising (doesn't help that my voice timbre makes me sound like I'm about 8 years old). And this couch had the stupidest fucking assembly instructions ever.

arg couch

Yes, you're reading that correctly. You have to flip the couch upside down, lay it flat, and then hover it somehow so that the TOP of that little side panel fits into the BOTTOM of the side of the couch. Why can we just flip the couch right side up and screw it on, you say? Because you have to open up the bottom of the couch to find the screw holes. Oy.

I ended up folding the couch in half into an L and then resting the top of the L on my (also freshly assembled) side table. Then I screwed on the panel at a slant. Don't even get me started on the stupid allen wrench...

Anyway, I suppose the couch looks nice, and I got it shipped for free instead of the exorbitant IKEA shipping price. And I felt all engineer-like while building it. So...I mean, I suppose it was an experience? Just not one I would have cared for on my birthday. Of course, it was fantastically cold outside, so it's probably just as well.

So, maybe I can attribute this to having a keen interest/profession in the world of software engineering, but I've been weirdly invested in the characters from this episode to the extent that I'm actually writing a small fic about Caleb Phipps and Chris Beckner's lives after the episode.

And yeah yeah, every person thinks their fic is super interesting and merits paragraphs of discussion while other people are like, ermagerd please no more. It's just that I think those two characters complement one another very well, and maybe Teen Wolf and Skyfall have given me a thing for age difference!fics. Again, they're also both my compu-nerd homeboys, so there's that.

So this is probably going to be the tiniest most obscure fic ever, even more obscure than my Godzilla fic (which I will finish at some point, I swear!)

I love writing engineers and scientists because I think their reasoning and decision making paths are subtly different than others, and I understand them and feel they aren't showcased enough in fandom. This is why I have a huge fan-crush on the XMFC fandom, because Charles is a genetics professor, and Erik is often written as an engineer, and I explode from happiness at watching geeks romance in their natural habitats. :D

Anywayyy, fandom aside, what were your thoughts on the episode? I haven't seen Prisoner's Dilemma yet, but I have it buffered in one of my browser tabs. I'll have to watch it once I've finished moving into my new flat.

I was going through Churchill quotes today. Loved this one!

"You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life."

Can I be real with you guys? I LOOOVE pretend-to-be-married!fics. There's just something about them: they're usually hilarious and heartwarming and just...hnnng. Love all of it, wish I could cuddle it close.

I'm randomly entangled with this particular trope at the moment in the Skyfall fandom. (Yeah, I have a bunch of unfinished stubs, but I have yet to post anything complete. This is apparently how I work in fandom, alas.) Bond and Q have trust issues by the tonne, so it's really fun to write so far, and I love writing Monepenny in this story because she takes everything in stride:

"I bought you an egg separator," Moneypenny said and held it out ceremoniously. "It separates eggs. Best wishes."

It was nice that someone was having a laugh about this, Q thought sourly and pocketed Moneypenny's wedding gift to blow up later.

Do you have any pretend-to-be-married!fics, Skyfall or no? I've read some really good Destiel ones in the Supernatural fandom, and other great AE fics in the Inception fandom, but I always welcome new stories or old favourites. :D

Finally drove down to Massachusetts to meet my old friends from the Charles River Museum Steampunk meetup. I emptied my purse when I got back and found 2 biscotti (from tea time), a fountain pen with 6 nibs (from the swap table), and a small bag of very fine blueberry tea with flowers and dried fruit (my own tea contribution). I feel swag as hell.

I wanted to drink some of my tea in the evening, but I didn't have an infuser, so I asked my extended stay hotel for more coffee satchets, cut a slice in one of them, and dumped out the coffee. Then I spooned in my tea, twisted the top, and tied it off with thread from my emergency sewing kit. Result? The worst looking tea bag of all time, but it does the job (even thought it still smells slightly of coffee). I guess this is what the engineering department meant by problem solving, though I suspect they meant some invention to benefit humanity, and not to make myself a cuppa.

I've been off LJ for a bit, but hopefully now that I'm back for some bangs, my LJ will be livelier.

2012 IRL Highlights
  1. I got a new job! I'm now working as an associate software developer for an investments firm.
  2. I moved for my job! I was placed in New England, so now I'm staying temporarily in a hotel in Nashua, NH until my flat opens up. (That's when the real work begins, agh. So much furniture to assemble...)
2012 Fandom Highlights
  1. I participated in my first bang ([livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang) in the 2011-2012 timeframe and loved it! I did a bit of a rushed Jurassic Park 3 fic because my thesis was due the same week, but maybe I'll post a director's cut version of the fic at some point? I'm doing it again this year for the Hitcher (1986 original) fandom. [livejournal.com profile] missaffliction is the most fabulous beta.
  2. I got into the Skyfall fandom later this year, and I'm planning to sign up for their James Bond/Q Bang ([livejournal.com profile] 00q_bb) in February. I love engineers and coders in media, so I'm a little addicted to this fandom at the moment. Speaking of addicted...
  3. I randomly got into the Teen Wolf fandom, and they write some of the best fanfiction. I was so amazed. That was probably the one fandom that totally took over my tumblr dash and AO3, and I haven't even seen ten minutes of the show. That's crazy. Thanks, Teen Wolf fandom. You're pretty awesome.
  4. I made so many new fandom friends! Really excited about this. I've met so many wonderful people!
How was your year? Any highlights or good news? I hope everyone's new year will be amazing!
foolish_m0rtal: (Default)
Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] nerak_rose and [livejournal.com profile] valinorean or the cute little gingerbread men! :D I am ridiculously excited for the 00Q Big Bang to get started in the new year!

Fire alarm went off in my place, and I stood around in the cold and met a cool lady software engineer. We bitched about mobile app testing for a while, and then the fire truck rolled up with a bunch of unfairly attractive firemen (I thought that was a lie propagated by media??), so we watched them for a while and then peaced. Best New Years Eve ever.

This is probably as good as it will get, since the friend who invited me over for New Years switched locations to Rhode Island, which is at least an hour away. Nope, not gonna.

Because it's become weirdly fanon that Q doesn't know how to drive. I learned British English via the Indian school system, but now I live in America, so the Indian English I'm using to write in the Skyfall fandom is probably horrendously tainted. Any corrections are wholly welcome.

Also, if anyone has any glib suggestions for a fic title involving cars, I'm all ears. At the moment, I only have lyrics from the odd car song:

  1. "I'll take you anywhere you want me to" (Little Honda by the Beach Boys)
  2. "systematic, hydromatic" (Greased Lightning from Grease)
  3. "baby you can drive my car" (Drive My Car by the Beatles)
  4. "all i hear is your gear" (I'm in Love With My Car by Queen

the friending meme is open all through december @ [livejournal.com profile] 00q_bb

ERMAGERD FRIENDING MEME! Any of my flist that is on the 00Q ship should go over and sign up for the 00Q Big Bang! It goes from February (sign ups) to August (posting), which gives us an incredibly generous 6 months to write a 15K minimum story. Pretty sweet!

I'll be coming down from my [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang adrenaline feels at that point. ([livejournal.com profile] missaffliction is my beta for that bang. If I were a religious person, I would say she is a gift from the godesses. Seriously, freaking amazing. So lucky to have her.) I'm doing a fic for the Hitcher fandom (the 1986 original with Rutger Hauer. So good), so it will be a nice break to go into the Skyfall fandom afterwards, especially since I'm thinking of doing a more lighthearted fic for the bang.

Anywho, I've been meeting a bunch of awesome people through this friending meme, which is probably all the excuse I need to get my ass off tumblr and back onto LJ. I love LJ, but it requires more effort to maintain the kind of feedback you get from tumblr, however hollow and one-sided that feedback may be.

tl;dr? 00Q Big Bang. You should join me.

I'm moving!

I will be moving for my job in December. Currently I'm in training in North Carolina, but I'll be moving to New England at the very end of this year. I don't really know anyone in the area and was wondering if anyone on my flist had suggestions about places to go, stuff to keep in mind, what to pack, etc.

I would also be totally down with hanging out if anyone is in the area.
foolish_m0rtal: (Default)
This is a little early, but anyone who would like a Christmas card from me is welcome to message me with a mailing address. I did this last year with a few people, and I had so much fun!

I'm writing a story about Bond teaching Q how to drive a car, because most of the fics I've seen feature a Q that doesn't know how to drive, and I know this is perfectly accurate through my friends who live in urban areas.

This story isn't Britpicked at the moment. I learned English in India, and even though I speak American English with my IRL and online friends, I do speak Indian English with my family. It's a lot closer to British English than American English, and I don't want some poor U.K resident to suffer through my story. I am doing my research as I go, so if something doesn't 'sound' right, I try to rework it.

I'm a lot more familiar with Q because I'm a software engineer and know at least how he might think even if I'm not even a fraction as brilliant or resourceful. Bond is more difficult to grasp as a character. I'm not sure if I made him too personable.

*shrug* Anyway, this is the first bit. What do you think?

(put on your ragged sweatshirt) i'll take you anywhere you want me to )

Leaving in a bit to see the U.S. premiere of Skyfall!!! Here are some things I'm looking forward to. No spoilers.
